Course Details

The MSc comprises 12 modules; eight compulsory and two of the optional taught modules; two group project modules alongside an individual research project.

Compulsory Modules

All the modules in the following list need to be taken as part of this course.

1. Applied Safety and Human Factors in Aviation: Enables students to investigate human factors in flight operations, identify issues of system integration, and develop a safety management system by a scientific approach.
2. Human Error and System Safety: Provides knowledge and skills to appraise human error and factors affecting human performance, and to apply tools and methods for system safety.
3. Human-Computer Interaction in Aviation: Focuses on system approach to address flight deck design, human factors certification, incident and accident investigation, workload and performance, and human-information processing.
4. Cognitive Ergonomics: Introduces key areas of human psychology that underpin principles, theories, and models applied in aviation human factors.
5. Research Methods (MSc only): Develops skill sets in safety and human factors, including research ethics, experimental design, qualitative data analysis, and statistical tests.
6. Aviation Safety Management: Provides fundamental skills required to manage operational safety within the aviation industry.
7. Training and Simulation: Enables students to identify training needs, develop training programs, and explore methods for training and simulation in aviation.
8. Flight Data Monitoring: Provides an understanding of Flight Data Monitoring within a commercial organization and details the uses, processes, and responsibilities of a successful FDM program.

Optional Modules

• Aircraft Accident Investigation and Response: Based on a case study approach to aircraft accident investigation, providing experience in important elements of aircraft accident investigation.
• Human Factors in Aviation Maintenance: Offers a broad overview of the nature and management of human error in the aviation maintenance domain.

Entry Requirements

• A UK lower second-class undergraduate degree with honors, or an equivalent international qualification, in an engineering, aeronautical engineering, mathematics, ergonomics, psychology, or other science discipline.
• Relevant work experience in combination with a degree that does not meet the minimum entry requirement will be considered.
• English language proficiency: IELTS Academic 6.5 overall and 5.5 in all skill components, or equivalent.
