The Through-life Engineering Services Specialist Master's Degree Apprenticeship is designed to provide delegates with the skills, knowledge, and behaviors necessary to maximize revenue through the provision of services that keep products operating effectively. This apprenticeship allows organizations to extend the life of their high-value assets, reducing costs while working towards achieving sustainability and ESG goals.

Qualifications Underpinning the Standard

The Through-life Engineering Services Specialist Apprenticeship is underpinned by the Through-life System Sustainment MSc, a mature executive course accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), and Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS) on behalf of the Engineering Council.

This Level 7 Apprenticeship has been developed for organizations that require their workforce to engage in matters related to through-life management, support, asset management, servitisation, and/or maintenance.

Group Project

The group project gives a team of students the opportunity to take on responsibility for a consultancy-type project working for an industrial sponsor. The group project is determined in collaboration with the sponsor organization and will aim to solve real-world problems. A dissertation can replace the group project.


Modules

The following are compulsory modules for the course:


  1. Managing Assets and Value
    • Aim: Outline the Through-life Engineering Services (TES) framework and develop a basic understanding of the key value drivers and performance criteria.
    • Syllabus: Through-life value delivery, asset management business models, value in use, stakeholder analysis, service design, economic drivers for asset management.
    • Intended learning outcomes: Appraise the key through-life drivers, perform critical analysis of alternative business models, estimate value in the context of service networks, assess cost and performance trade-off options.
  2. Through-Life System Effectiveness
    • Aim: Examine the fundamental factors that influence the availability of complex engineering equipment.
    • Syllabus: System effectiveness, availability, reliability, and maintainability (AR&M), logistics, supportability concepts, integrated logistic support (ILS).
    • Intended learning outcomes: Appraise supportability concepts and logistics, analyze the measures of AR&M, evaluate AR&M and logistic techniques.
  3. Leadership and Change Management
    • Aim: Provide support solutions specialists with an understanding of different leadership models and frameworks and their application to change management.
    • Syllabus: Leadership roles and responsibilities, values, attitudes, and behaviors, change management, resistance to change.
    • Intended learning outcomes: Examine leadership attributes and behaviors, evaluate the skills required for leadership and management of relationships and partnerships.
  4. Optimising Whole Life Cost and Performance Management
    • Aim: Introduce Cost Engineering principles, procedures, and practices that contribute to the development of affordable products and services.
    • Syllabus: Economic through-life system development, cost engineering principles, whole life costing, integrated logistic support (ILS) costing.
    • Intended learning outcomes: Critically apply the key techniques for whole life costing and performance management, analyze cost estimates for robustness.
  5. Operational Availability and Risk
    • Aim: Study the relationship between the concept of operational availability and risk in systems.
    • Syllabus: Principles and concepts of risk and availability modeling, problem definition, FMEA, and root cause analysis.
    • Intended learning outcomes: Critically evaluate the concept of operational availability, assess the concept of risk, evaluate the applicability of conventional risk assessment tools.
  6. Through-Life Business Models and Servitisation
    • Aim: Enable students to analyze critically the challenges and key issues for the development of alternative business models for Through Life Support.
    • Syllabus: Contracted support options, commercial approaches, the evolution of global trends in maintenance and support.
    • Intended learning outcomes: Derive the key characteristics of a range of business models, determine the broad requirements for organizations to operate within these business models.
  7. Information Management
    • Aim: Provide fundamental concepts and working knowledge on information management.
    • Syllabus: Business requirements and digital transformation, data value chains, data asset lifecycle management challenges.
    • Intended learning outcomes: Analyze data and information management concepts and practice, compose information management concepts and technologies to drive opportunities.
  8. Diagnostics and Prognostics
    • Aim: Provide working knowledge on the design, development, implementation, and evaluation of diagnostics, prognostics, and health assessment technologies.
    • Syllabus: Introduction to diagnostics and prognostics, computational tools, raw data analysis, and signal processing.
    • Intended learning outcomes: Assess the benefits of key concepts and techniques for maintenance planning, diagnostics, and prognostics, evaluate activities to enable the avoidance of deterioration.

Teaching Team

The teaching team includes industry-active research academics from Cranfield with an established track record in product-service and maintenance systems, and through-life capability management.


Fees and Funding

  • Apprenticeship levy: £17,000 (includes tuition fees and endpoint assessment only)
  • Eligible organizations can use their Apprenticeship Levy to cover the cost of the program.

Entry Requirements

  • Academic requirements: A first or second-class UK Honours degree in a relevant engineering or technology-based discipline or international equivalent. Relevant industry experience may be considered.
  • English language requirements: Applicants must demonstrate that they can communicate effectively in English in an academic environment prior to the start of the course.
  • Apprenticeship requirements: As part of all Higher-Level Apprenticeships in England, it is a requirement that an apprentice holds or achieves an approved level 2 qualification in Mathematics and English before they can successfully complete the apprenticeship.
