Program Overview
Introduction to the Ubiquitous Cognitive Navigation with AI Based Systems PhD
The Ubiquitous Cognitive Navigation with AI Based Systems PhD is a fully-funded studentship sponsored by the EPSRC Doctoral Landscape Awards (DLA), Cranfield University, and Spirent Communications. This PhD project aims to advance the development of intelligent and resilient navigation systems for autonomous transport.
Project Overview
The project focuses on designing AI-driven cognitive navigation solutions that can adaptively fuse multiple sensor sources under uncertainty, enabling safe and efficient operation of autonomous systems in complex, real-world conditions. The goal is to develop resilient Position, Navigation, and Timing (PNT) systems for autonomous transport, addressing a critical challenge in the UK's Net Zero transition.
Research Objectives
The research objectives include:
- Designing a smart cognitive navigation framework that can learn to make decisions on its own using signals from various sensors.
- Developing novel AI algorithms and validated navigation architectures for next-generation intelligent mobility solutions.
- Contributing to the UK's Net Zero transport strategy through the advancement of intelligent and resilient navigation systems.
Benefits and Opportunities
The student will have the opportunity to:
- Undertake two industry placements at Spirent Communications.
- Use high-tech simulation equipment and access valuable industry data.
- Present research at leading international conferences.
- Receive additional training in software-defined radio, hardware-in-the-loop testing, and advanced AI methods.
- Join a vibrant community and team of researchers at Cranfield University.
Entry Requirements
Applicants should have:
- A first or second-class UK honors degree or equivalent in a related discipline.
- Experience with programming (Python, MATLAB).
- A background in aerospace, computer science, robotics, or electrical engineering.
- Hands-on skills in implementing fusion/learning-based techniques in robotics or autonomous systems.
- An interest in autonomous systems and signal processing.
- A willingness to work with equipment and embedded platforms.
Funding
The studentship includes a bursary of £24,000 per annum, covering full tuition fees. To be eligible, applicants must be classified as a home student and have no restrictions on their stay in the UK.
Diversity and Inclusion
Cranfield University is committed to fostering equity, diversity, and inclusion. The university warmly encourages applications from students of all backgrounds, including those from underrepresented groups.
Cranfield Doctoral Network
Research students at Cranfield benefit from being part of a dynamic and professional study environment. The Cranfield Doctoral Network provides a platform for researchers to share ideas, collaborate, and access a tailored program of seminars and events.
