Social Science (Welsh Medium)

Course Overview

The Social Science degree at Bangor University is a unique opportunity to study social issues and develop skills to make a real impact in communities and beyond. Course Structure

The course is structured over three years, with optional additional years for international experience or placement. The first year introduces students to key concepts in social science, including research skills, criminology, sociology, and social policy. The second year builds on these foundations, exploring contemporary debates, social and political research, and social theory. The third year focuses on specialized topics such as education in contemporary Wales, crime and justice, and dissertation research.

• Crime and Justice in Modern Britain: The role, responsibilities, and accountability of criminal justice agencies in the context of contemporary concerns.
• Contemporary Social and Political Debates: A dynamic course responding to emerging social and political issues, with a focus on critical and reflective thinking.
• Social and Political Research: Introduction to different research methods and techniques, providing an understanding of research design, data analysis, interpretation, and presentation.

Graduates of the Social Science degree can pursue a wide range of careers, including roles in public administration, economy and community development, children and family support, housing and welfare, third sector/voluntary sector staff, events coordination, grants officer, human resources, international aid/development work, journalism, local government graduate trainee, personnel management, probation officer, public relations, research, youth work, and victim advocacy. Some roles may require additional training or qualifications.

Fees and Costs

• Tuition Fees: £9,790 for UK and Ireland students, with provisional fees for international students at £18,000.
• Placement Year Fee: £1,958.
• International Experience Year Fee: £1,468.
• Additional costs may include books, printing, photocopying, educational stationery, specialist clothing, travel to placements, optional field trips, and software.
