Institutional Perspectives of Global Financial Crime (ASB-9057)

Course Overview

The Institutional Perspectives of Global Financial Crime module is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the legislative and regulatory environment that defines and seeks to control financial crime associated with inappropriate exploitation of the physical environment and money-laundering based on trade. The module explores the motivations for initial development and persistence of each crime, how they may be detected, and appropriate policy responses to counter and combat such crimes.

Learning Outcomes

• Research the organisational risk arising from failure to implement policies of due diligence intended to avoid sanctions.
• Critically assess the framework of global regulation and sanctions enforcement as institutional responses to these forms of crime.
• Evaluate alternative methods to detect such crimes and mitigate their impact on the organisation itself and wider society.
• Research the global supply/value chain and global payment systems as a context in which to comprehend aspects of environmental crime and trade-based money laundering.

Learning Methods

This module is delivered through distance learning on a part-time basis, allowing students to study at their own pace. A combination of interactive classes and recorded lectures are provided throughout the 6-month semester, offering participants a good work-life balance. The virtual learning environment used is Blackboard, where each module has a bespoke area with all study resources, including study guides, e-textbooks, and access to the online library.

The module utilizes three course handbooks accessed through the ManchesterCF platform, a specialist training provider in financial crime. These materials explore theoretical concepts and practical aspects of trade-based, environmental crime, and economic sanctions, introducing a wide range of real-world cases.

Means of Assessment

The assessment for this module consists of two parts:

1. Research: Identify the current state-of-play for Institutional Perspectives of Global Financial Crime in product and geographic areas of operation for each of the three topics, and assess how these compare to developments in the industry globally. (5500 words, 75% module weighting)
2. Critical Evaluation: Evaluate best practices for risk mitigation for Institutional Perspectives of Global Financial Crime as indicated in the study materials and supplementary readings across the three topics. (1500 words, 25% module weighting)
