Mindfulness Teaching Skills

Bangor University's School of Human and Behavioral Sciences, through the Centre for Mindfulness Research and Practice, offers a program in Mindfulness Teaching Skills. This program includes various components such as the MBI:TAC Tool, translations, The TLC, publications, research, and training to use the tool.

Program Structure

The program is structured into levels of training, with each level building on the previous one. The levels include:

• Level 1: Introduction
• Level 2: Deepening
• Level 3: Testing

Level 2 MBI:TAC Training: Deepening for Trainers and Supervisors

This deepening training aims to create a container within which participants can investigate and deepen their understanding and appreciation of both the mindfulness-based teaching process and their own process as they engage with reviewing teaching practice.

Training Objectives

The training will give time to both content issues and process themes, including:

• How to prioritize different elements
• Distinctions between domains and competence levels
• Curriculum questions
• The vulnerability inherent in investigating mindfulness teaching skills
• Personal process issues triggered by assessing/reviewing teaching

Training Methodology

The skill of reliably discerning competence level takes time and practice. Participants will be given a benchmarked competence level in advance of reviewing a clip, and their task will be to discern what features within the teaching have led to this assessment outcome. The training will include:

• Audio-visual teaching clips that progressively expand the elements of curriculum and domains
• Weekly feedback on assessment reliability
• Training in ways of skilfully offering feedback to supervisees and trainees

Delivery Format

The training will consist of 9 x 3-hour sessions delivered via Zoom, with 5 teacher-led sessions and 4 peer-led sessions, scheduled at 2-week intervals. Participants will be given home practice involving assessing clips of recorded MBP teaching and reading material.

Eligibility

The training is open to practitioners who have completed the Level 1 MBI:TAC training and are in supervisory and/or training roles.

Learning Aims

The deepening training aims to:

1. Refine and differentiate the structure and meaning of the six competence levels within the MBI:TAC
2. Build skills in conducting assessments reliably
3. Build skills in offering verbal and written feedback
4. Embed understanding of ways of approaching competence assessments
5. Develop and refine comprehension of skilful and sensitive ways of staging the introduction of the tool
6. Identify the various lenses we bring to teaching and to offering ourselves and others feedback
