Program Overview
Architecture (Industrial) MArch, MEng
The Architecture (Industrial) MArch, MEng program at the University of Leeds is a six-year course that integrates creative and technical knowledge in architecture, structural, and building services engineering. This innovative program is the first and only one in the UK to offer this range of integrated learning, recognized by professional bodies.
Overview
Innovative building design is driving the inspirational environments of the future. By bringing together architecture and engineering, the next generation of architects can ensure that today's emerging issues, including safety, environmental impact, and sustainability, are addressed as we push the boundaries of design and reimagine the buildings of tomorrow.
Course Structure
The course is divided into six years, with the option to graduate with a BEng in Architectural Engineering after three years or an Architectural Engineering MEng, BEng after five years. The sixth year focuses on project work, with students developing and completing design and investigative projects that reflect their personal interests.
Year 1
In the first year, students gain a thorough understanding of the fundamental subjects that underpin civil engineering architecture and the materials and methods available to practitioners in different contexts. Compulsory modules include:
- Architecture and Sustainability
- Surveying, Construction Technology, and Management
- Structural Analysis and Design
- Materials, Water, and Soils
- Engineering Mathematics and Modelling 1
- Integrated Design Project 1 (including Design Studio 1)
Year 2
In the second year, students consolidate their technical knowledge of structural design and analysis, materials, and geotechnics, as well as building physics. Compulsory modules include:
- Water Engineering and Geotechnics
- Engineering Mathematics and Modelling 2
- Design Studio 2
- Structural Design and Materials 1
- Architectural History and Theory 2
- Building Physics 1: Fundamental Principles
Year 3
In the third year, students focus more on architectural design projects and work on urban design issues in their study of architectural history and theory. Compulsory modules include:
- Structural Design and Materials 2
- Design Studio 3.1
- Design Studio 3.2
- Individual Research Project 1
- Architectural History and Theory 3
- Building Physics 2: Services Design
Year 4
This is an additional year where MArch MEng students can take a year in industry, either between years 2-3 or between years 3-4.
Year 5
In the fifth year, students focus on project work, with their architecture design projects linked to research-focused modules in architectural history and theory, building physics, and the context of the construction industry in Law, Practice & Project management.
Year 6
In the final year, students further develop their ability to produce creative and critically evaluative design and written project work. Compulsory modules include:
- Procurement and Risk Management
- Architecture Dissertation
- Design Studio 5
Optional Modules
Students can choose one of the following modules to extend the range of their knowledge and understanding:
- Low Energy Building Systems
- Advanced Construction Issues
Learning and Teaching
Studio-based learning is at the heart of the student experience, with open-ended and creative architectural design projects used to demonstrate and develop the knowledge gained in other modules.
Assessment
Students are assessed through a range of approaches, including assessments that closely match the type of work and tasks they might undertake in a professional work environment.
Entry Requirements
- A-level: AAA including Mathematics
- Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), International Project Qualification (IPQ), and Welsh Baccalaureate Advanced Skills Challenge Certificate (ASCC): We recognize the value of these qualifications and the effort and enthusiasm that applicants put into them.
- GCSE: English Language at grade 4 or above, or an appropriate English language qualification
- Alternative qualifications: Access to HE Diploma, BTEC, Cambridge Pre-U, International Baccalaureate, Irish Leaving Certificate, Scottish Highers/Advanced Highers, T-Levels
