Language for Politics and Society

Overview

The Language for Politics and Society course is designed to improve academic English language skills to the level needed to study a Masters degree, whilst adapting to life in the UK and at the University of Leeds. Students will have the chance to study academic English directly relevant to sociology, social policy, politics, and international studies, experience and adapt to study in the UK ahead of their degree, and become familiar with the University facilities.

Course Details and Modules

The curriculum for this pre-sessional course is developed in collaboration with the academic faculty and is informed by research in English language teaching. Students will focus closely on the skills needed for their subject area, studying with students progressing to sociology, social policy, politics, and international studies degrees. The course structure includes:

• Listening to introductory academic lectures, exploring different themes over six weeks
• Working on understanding content and language used, along with core texts, through a series of language classes and seminars
• Typical modules/components studied may change from time to time

Learning and Teaching

Students will learn how to use language appropriate for their degree to express thoughts and ideas effectively. Teaching methods include:

• Classes, lectures, or practical sessions and group seminars
• Independent study to practise skills, deepen knowledge, and prepare for the degree
• Dedicated time with tutors to address questions about language and learning
• Teaching staff at the Language Centre contribute to academic research in language teaching, informing course content

Assessment

A range of assessment methods is used, which may include:

• Written assignments
• Speaking assignments
• Presentations
• Research projects

Entry Requirements

The entry requirement for this pre-sessional English course depends on the IELTS requirement of the Masters course. For a Masters course requiring an overall IELTS score of 6.5, students need:

• 6.0 overall with no components below 5.5
• The minimum age for students studying on this course is 18 years old
