The Teaching English for Academic Purposes PGDip is a part-time, fully online course that develops skills in teaching English for Academic Purposes. The course focuses on how academic English is taught and explores different approaches within the field, examining the wider context of politics and cultures in higher education.

Course Overview

In this course, students build on their research and analytical skills, as well as their linguistic and intercultural knowledge, allowing them to develop as practitioners. Throughout the course, students collaborate with others, developing their teaching practice and ability to research and engage in scholarship about their practice, contributing to the field through their work.

Course Details and Modules

The course is structured over two years, with students exploring the context and cultures involved in academic communication in the first year. In the second year, students study both core and optional modules to deepen their knowledge of key concepts in the teaching of English for academic purposes.

Year 1 Compulsory Modules

• Participants, Practices and Pedagogies in Academic Communication (30 credits)
• Knowledge, Politics and Cultures in Academia (30 credits)

Year 2 Compulsory Modules

• Text Analysis (15 credits)

Learning and Teaching

Students study with experts in the field at the University of Leeds Language Centre, who are directly involved in the practice and development of teaching English for Academic Purposes. The course features asynchronous recorded lectures and seminar discussions, with access to learning materials through the University's Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) and other learning platforms.

Assessment

Assessment methods include written essays, presentations, teaching observations, and research projects, providing a variety of ways for students to demonstrate their knowledge and skills.

Entry Requirements

• A bachelor undergraduate degree or equivalent
• Either a postgraduate teaching qualification or at least two years of teaching experience in higher education or teaching English for specific purposes
• IELTS 7.0 overall, with no less than 7.0 in all components, or equivalent

• Part-time fees are normally calculated based on the number of credits studied in a year compared to the equivalent full-time course
