Program Overview

Architectural Engineering (Industrial) MEng, BEng

The Architectural Engineering (Industrial) MEng, BEng program at the University of Leeds is designed to equip students with the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in the field of architectural engineering. This five-year program combines theoretical and practical learning, providing students with a comprehensive understanding of the subject.

Overview

Architectural engineering brings to life the high-performance buildings of the future, addressing our growing need for more sustainable, climate change resilient, energy efficient, and smart places to live, work, and spend time. The next generation of architectural engineers will bring together a range of skills, disciplines, and technologies and apply them in new and exciting ways.

Course Structure

The course integrates creative and technical knowledge and practice in architecture, structural, and building services engineering all underpinned by globally-renowned research and industrial practice. Students will learn how to get results from a multi-disciplinary approach, collaborate with professionals, and play an important role in building a sustainable future for everyone.

Year 1

In the first year, students will gain a thorough understanding of the fundamental subjects that underpin civil engineering and architectural engineering, plus the materials and methods available to practitioners in different contexts. Compulsory modules include:

  • Architecture and Sustainability
  • Surveying, Construction Technology, and Management
  • Structural Analysis and Design
  • Materials, Water, and Soils
  • Engineering Mathematics and Modelling 1
  • Integrated Design Project 1 (including Design Studio 1)

Year 2

In the second year, students will consolidate their technical knowledge of structural design and analysis, materials, and geotechnics, as well as building physics. Compulsory modules include:

  • Water Engineering and Geotechnics
  • Engineering Mathematics and Modelling 2
  • Design Studio 2
  • Structural Design and Materials 1
  • Architectural History and Theory 2
  • Building Physics 1: Fundamental Principles

Year 3

This is an additional year where MEng, BEng students can take a year in industry either between years 2-3 or between years 3-4. Students will have the opportunity to apply to spend a year in industry, which is an invaluable opportunity to transfer their learning into a practical setting.

Year 4

In the fourth year, students will enhance their engineering knowledge in structures, geotechnics, materials, and building physics and demonstrate an integrated understanding of creative and technical building design in their third-year design studio work. Compulsory modules include:

  • Water Engineering and Geotechnics 2
  • Structural Design and Materials 2
  • Design Studio 3.2
  • Individual Research Project 1
  • Architectural History and Theory 3
  • Building Physics 2: Services Design

Year 5

In the final year, students will focus on two interlinked design studio exercises. These design projects will involve concept and detailed design of a complex building with a strong community focus. Compulsory modules include:

  • Architectural History and Theory 4
  • Management, Practice, and Law
  • Building Physics 3
  • Design Studio 4.1
  • Design Studio 4.2

Learning and Teaching

Studio-based learning is at the heart of the architectural engineering student experience, with open-ended and creative architectural engineering design projects used to demonstrate and develop the knowledge gained in other modules.

Assessment

Students will be assessed through a range of approaches, including assessments that closely match the type of work and tasks they might undertake in a professional work environment.

Entry Requirements

  • A-level: AAA including Mathematics
  • GCSE: English Language grade 4 (C) or higher
  • Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), International Project Qualification (IPQ), and Welsh Baccalaureate Advanced Skills Challenge Certificate (ASCC) are also accepted

Fees

  • UK: 」9,790
  • International: 」32,750 (per year)

Career Opportunities

Architectural engineering graduates are in great demand, and University of Leeds students are among the top 5 most targeted by top employers. Typically, the majority of graduates each year secure professional or managerial positions and take their first steps in their career as structural, civil, or building services engineers, design engineers, architectural engineers, or architectural consultants.

Work Placements

This program gives students the opportunity to undertake a paid industrial placement year as part of the course. Our close industry links mean students will be in direct contact with potential employers, and our Employability Team will help every step of the way.
