BSc (Hons) Quantity Surveying

Overview

The BSc Honours Quantity Surveying programme is designed to equip students with the skills and knowledge required to succeed in the construction industry. The course is taught by Chartered Surveyors with extensive professional practice experience and features regular guest lectures from industry experts.

Course details

In the first year, students will learn from a broad range of topics to give them a feel for Surveying as a profession, including introductions to Construction Costs and Measurement, Building Design and Technology, Property Value Studies, and Property and Construction Law.

Students will then progress to more specialist subjects, including Construction Financial Management, Construction Project Management, and Construction Contracts, and further develop their skills in Cost Planning and Estimating, Measurement and Quantification of Construction, and Building Design and Technology.

In the final two years, students will work on their Honours project and gain enhanced skills in areas such as presenting, negotiating, soft skills, Commercial Management, and Conservation Surveying to prepare them for their full-time role in the construction industry.

How you'll be taught

• Classes are presented using a blend of face-to-face teaching and online resources through the University's Virtual Learning Environment.
• The practical application of knowledge is the foundation for the QS course, where we recreate real-life scenarios and learn how to deal with them in a classroom environment.

Assessments

• No exams for all level 7 modules in the first 18 months of the programme.
• Assignments comprise mainly scenario-based activities emphasizing the applied knowledge approach and employing an active learning ethos.

Work placement

• Students will utilise their current employment related to their part-time surveying studies by undertaking the work placement module in Trimester 3 of years 4 and 5.

Minimum Year 1

• SQA Higher: BBBC (Standard Entry Requirement), CCCC (Minimum Entry Requirement)
• A level: CCC
• Irish Leaving Certificate: H3, H3, H3, H3 at Higher Level
• BTEC National Extended Diploma (Level 3): MMM (Merit, Merit, Merit) in a related subject
• BTEC National Diploma (Level 3): DD (Distinction, Distinction) in a related subject
• International Baccalaureate Diploma: Award of Diploma with 26 points overall with three Higher Level subjects at grades 5, 5, 5
• T level: Pass

Minimum Year 2

• SQA Advanced Highers: BBC
• A level: BBB
• BTEC National Extended Diploma (Level 3): DDM (Distinction, Distinction, Merit) in a related subject
• HNC: Pass HNC in Construction, Construction Management, Built Environment, Architectural Technology, Quantity Surveying with grade B in the Graded Unit.

English language

• If your first language isn't English, you'll normally need to undertake an approved English language test and our minimum English language requirements will apply.

International students

• We welcome applications from students studying a wide range of international qualifications.
• The University does not sponsor students to study on part-time programmes in the UK under the Student Visa route. International Applicants must therefore have other valid immigration leave to study on this programme.
