Study Start Programme

The Study Start Programme is a two-week academic induction designed for international students at Lancaster University. The programme aims to help students become independent and confident, well-prepared for life at the university.

Programme Details

Students will study in small classes with one tutor guiding the group learning and supporting individual students with feedback and discussions. The programme has several key objectives:

• To raise awareness of writing conventions in different academic discourse communities
• To develop and practise effective study and time management skills
• To develop referencing skills
• To raise awareness of the expectations and standards at the appropriate level of study
• To maximise students' chances of succeeding in their degree programmes
• For international students, to assist in settling into the academic culture of the UK

Assessments

The main assessment method is a written assignment (1000 words) submitted in several stages before the final submission at the end of the programme. The feedback received on this assignment will help students decide which aspects of their work to prioritise when their degree coursework starts.

• Study Dates: Monday, 07 September – Friday, 18 September 2026
• 2026 Programme Cost: £1,050
• Please note that the programme is subject to a minimum enrolment of 8 students per undergraduate/postgraduate cohort. If this number is not met, the University reserves the right to cancel the course.

Arrival and Accommodation

For in-person students, information about arrivals, accommodation, and shuttle options from Manchester Airport will be provided via email close to the start of the pre-sessional programme. Travel information to campus is available. Accommodation is automatically assigned once the course offer is accepted, with rooms having a private bathroom and shared kitchen. The cost for pre-sessional English programmes and Study Start accommodation in 2026 is £196.63 per week for an ensuite room.

There are also pre-sessional English programmes available for students who require an IELTS uplift:

• 4-week programme (5 weeks online) for a 0.5 IELTS uplift
• 10-week programme for a 1.0 IELTS uplift
• 20-week programme for a 1.5 IELTS uplift
• 30-week programme for a 2.0 IELTS uplift
