Program Overview

Electronic and Electrical Engineering with Placement Year MEng Hons

The Electronic and Electrical Engineering with Placement Year MEng Hons program at Lancaster University is a five-year course that combines theoretical foundations with practical experience. The program is designed to provide students with a broad understanding of engineering principles and their application in electronic and electrical engineering.

Overview

The program starts with a general engineering first year, where students share their experience with all School of Engineering students, regardless of their specialization. This year is dedicated to providing a broad understanding of general engineering and its applications. In the subsequent years, students specialize in electronic and electrical engineering, developing their core skills as engineers and building their familiarity and practical experience in power engineering, communications, analogue circuitry, and digital systems.

What to Expect

The program includes topics such as circuitry and instrumentation, heat transfer, and manufacturing, which form a key requirement of modern electrical and electronic systems. Students will work in state-of-the-art facilities, developing their creativity and technical skills as they design, build, and test to solve real-world problems. The program also includes a year in industry, where students can apply the knowledge and skills they have learned and gain invaluable experience.

Your Placement

In the fourth year, students undertake a year in industry, which enables them to apply the knowledge and skills they have learned and gain invaluable experience. The university has extensive links with multinational corporate companies and smaller specialist SMEs, providing students with a wide range of placement opportunities.

Master's-Level Training

In the final year, students work on a substantial project into a topic of their choice, often interdisciplinary in nature and linked with industry or one of the university's research groups. This project applies their specialization to cutting-edge technology, solidifying their knowledge and placing them in an excellent position to launch their engineering career and progress toward achieving Chartered Engineer status.

Personal Development

Throughout the program, students develop valuable transferable skills that make them highly desirable to future employers, such as working in collaboration, communication, and the ability to design and build a product or device. Students also grow practical skills in diagnosis and testing, system maintenance, digital proficiencies, and the ability to consider and maintain work safety practices in a range of environments.

3 Things Our Electronic and Electrical Engineering Students Would Like You to Know

  • The University is highly regarded for design in research and encourages students to do things differently, so they're designing and innovating as they learn.
  • All engineers share the same newly-built facilities, allowing students to design circuits, use integrated software, or put the mechanical workshops to good use.
  • Students benefit from industry input into the degree and from the multidisciplinary approach to learning, which can be applied to loads of different career paths.

Your Department

The program is part of the Faculty of Science and Technology, specifically within the School of Engineering.

Course Accreditation

The program is accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) on behalf of the Engineering Council for the purposes of fully meeting the academic requirement for registration as an Incorporated Engineer and partly meeting the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered Engineer.

Careers

Graduates of the Electronic and Electrical Engineering with Placement Year MEng Hons program will have a broad range of subject-specific skills, such as CAD design, understanding electrical circuits, power systems, and much more. This in-depth, specialist knowledge will make them sought-after employees able to embark on a wide range of careers in sectors such as defense, power generation, automotive, telecoms, and utilities. The transferable skills developed can be applied to any career chosen.
