Mathematics, Artificial Intelligence, and Real-world Systems (MARS) MSci Hons

The Mathematics, Artificial Intelligence, and Real-world Systems (MARS) MSci Hons program is designed to provide students with a strong foundation in mathematics, artificial intelligence, and real-world systems. This four-year program combines the study of mathematical methods and concepts with the theoretical understanding and hands-on experience of AI, machine learning, and real-world modeling.

Overview

The program begins by building upon the student's understanding of mathematical methods and concepts through a mix of lectures and workshops. Students will explore a wide range of topics, including differential equations, multivariate calculus for AI and data science, probability, and statistics. In addition, students will study mathematical modeling and programming, learning the principles of scientific computing and gaining experience working with programming languages such as R and Python.

Course Structure

The program is divided into four years, with each year building on the previous one. In the first year, students will take core modules such as Logic and Discrete Mathematics, Mathematical Modelling and Programming, Matrices and Calculus, Multivariate Calculus, Probability and Statistics, and Symmetry and Sequences. In the second and third years, students will delve deeper into specialist optional modules and core concepts in linear algebra and probability. In the fourth year, students will have the opportunity to widen their knowledge and skills by selecting from a pool of Master's-level modules.

MARS Dissertation

In the final year, students will undertake a significant individual project, exploring an area of applied mathematics or mathematical AI that is of particular interest to them. This project will be guided by a supervisor and will provide students with the opportunity to showcase their findings in both written and oral form.

Fees and Funding

The annual tuition fee for the program is set for a 12-month session, starting at the beginning of each academic year. For the 2026/27 academic year, the tuition fees are:
