Pre-sessional English 20-week Programme

The 20-week pre-sessional English (PSE) programme is designed for students intending to study at Lancaster University who require or wish to improve their English language and study skills before starting their academic studies. This programme is delivered both in person (on campus) and online.

Course Structure and Programme Aims

This programme provides students with the opportunity to improve their English language proficiency and acquire the academic skills necessary to achieve their potential at Lancaster University. The course is divided into two parts:

• Part I (Weeks 1 to 10): Focuses on general English language improvement and the four skills (reading, writing, listening, and speaking).
• Part II (Weeks 11 to 20): Focuses on English for Academic Purposes, developing the range and accuracy of written and spoken language, and awareness and competency in language-related academic skills.

How You Will Be Taught

The programme is taught through live in-person or online sessions, preparing students for university life in the UK by upgrading their academic Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking, and Study skills. Students are introduced to university-style tasks and learning methods, with opportunities to practice language skills both in and out of the classroom.

Assessments

Students will take course assessments, which, if passed successfully, can be used for the English language requirement for their visa application. The programme assesses progress throughout the course using formative and summative assessments, with regular feedback provided.

Arrival and Accommodation

For in-person students, information about arrivals, accommodation, and shuttle options from Manchester Airport will be provided close to the start of the pre-sessional programme. Accommodation is automatically assigned on campus, with costs not included in the tuition fee.

Programme Details

• The cost for pre-sessional English programmes and Study Start accommodation in 2026 is ｣196.63 per week for an ensuite room with a private bathroom.
• Other pre-sessional English programmes are available, including:
  • 4-week programme (5 weeks online) for students requiring a 0.5 uplift in their IELTS.
  • 10-week programme for students requiring a 1.0 uplift in their IELTS.
  • 30-week programme for students requiring a 2.0 uplift in their IELTS.
