Film Summer School

The Film Summer School is an immersive three-week course that provides an opportunity to develop theoretical and practical knowledge in the world of film. Students will learn from distinguished research-led academics at a highly ranked university and enhance their global competencies by developing a diverse network of fellow creative students.

Programme Overview

This summer school is designed for undergraduate students aged 18 years or over who are studying at a university outside of the UK. The programme will explore the formal and technical composition of films, and students will learn how to undertake detailed analysis. Workshops will allow students to develop their practical skills using specialist equipment like cameras and digital film tools.

How You'll Learn

The programme will include:

• Lectures, seminars, and practical workshops to explore the formal and technical composition of films
• Film screenings to analyse a range of examples and become familiar with the key formal and semantic conventions of cinema
• A practical group project that will include meetings, pitching sessions, production, and post-production, and a presentation of the final project

Programme Schedule

The programme will be delivered over three weeks, with the following schedule:

Week 1

• Lecture: Cinematography and the shot, and mise-en-scčne, plus a film screening
• Seminar: Discussing the topic and the film
• Scriptwriting workshop
• Practical camera and sound workshop
• Post-production workshops

Week 2

• Lecture: Editing and film sound, plus a film screening
• Seminar: Discussing the topic and the film
• Lecture: Pre-production to production
• Practical camera and sound workshop
• Post-production workshops
• Pitching session and informative feedback on each project

Week 3

• One-to-one group meeting to finalise the plan for the film project
• Production and post-production of project
• Presentation of the completed work

Credits and Assessment

Students who complete this programme will be awarded 15 LU / 4 US / 7.5 ECTS credits. The programme will be assessed on three components:

• 40%: Short film project (2-3 minutes in duration)
• 20%: Group presentation (10 minutes)
• 40%: Reflective essay (2000 words)

The programme will provide an opportunity to meet a diverse network of students from all over the world. Students will experience student life at a beautiful parkland campus, near a thriving historic city, and will have the opportunity to participate in social activities and weekend trips.
