Biomedical science is the laboratory science that underpins disease diagnosis and management, focusing on how cells, organs, and systems function in the body. The course provides rigorous research-led teaching in the theory and practical techniques associated with biomedical science.

IBMS Accreditation and Health and Care Professions Council Registration

The course is accredited by the IBMS and has been designed to support students in meeting the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) educational standards required to register as a Biomedical Scientist in a UK healthcare laboratory.

Your Journey Through Biomedical Science

The curriculum is highly structured to meet the requirements for IBMS accreditation. Students will study fundamental themes in Year 1, including biomedical science practice, molecules of life, infection, immunity, anatomy, and physiology. In Year 2, students will progress to studying topics core to the discipline of biomedical science, including blood sciences, clinical biochemistry, medical microbiology, and cellular pathology.

Year Abroad

Students will spend their third year studying abroad at one of Lancaster's approved international partner universities. This provides an opportunity to develop a global outlook, expand professional networks, and gain cultural and personal skills.

Year 4

In the final year, students will focus on specific aspects of human disease, including clinical immunology, cancer, medical genetics, pathobiology, and global health challenges. Students will also carry out an independent research project, providing an opportunity to make a unique contribution to increasing scientific knowledge in an area of biomedical science.
