Program Overview
Chemistry MChem Hons
The Chemistry MChem Hons program at Lancaster University is a four-year undergraduate degree that provides students with a comprehensive education in chemistry. The program is designed to develop students' knowledge and skills in chemistry, as well as their ability to think critically and solve problems.
Overview
The program covers a wide range of topics in chemistry, including organic, inorganic, and physical chemistry. Students will learn about the fundamental principles of chemistry, including atomic structure, chemical bonding, and thermodynamics. They will also learn about the applications of chemistry in various fields, such as materials science, pharmaceuticals, and environmental science.
Course Structure
The program consists of four years of study, with each year building on the previous one. In the first year, students will take core modules in fundamental chemistry, including atomic structure, chemical bonding, and thermodynamics. In the second year, students will take modules in organic, inorganic, and physical chemistry, as well as practical chemistry skills. In the third year, students will take modules in advanced chemistry, including spectroscopy, electrochemistry, and quantum mechanics. In the fourth year, students will take modules in master's-level chemistry, including advanced synthetic chemistry, computational chemistry, and research skills.
Core Modules
- Fundamental Chemistry A: This module introduces students to the fundamentals of atoms and molecules, providing a base understanding from which to build their breadth and depth of knowledge.
- Fundamental Chemistry B: This module further explores key chemistry principles and gains a broad overview of future areas of chemistry that will be taught throughout the degree.
- Fundamental Practical Chemistry: This module develops students' practical chemistry skills, introducing them to a range of techniques to practically synthesize and characterize molecules and quantitatively measure their physical and chemical properties.
- Fundamental Science Concepts for Chemists: This module enhances students' interdisciplinary perspective by exploring fundamental concepts from physics at the interface of chemistry and learning about how the language of mathematics helps describe the world of atoms and molecules.
- Fundamental Skills in Chemistry: This module develops students' broader skill set, providing them with a toolkit to help make the most of their studies, including mathematical skills, communication and presentation techniques, data analysis and presentation, and career and employability skills.
Optional Modules
- Advanced Chemical Structure Elucidation: This module learns about advanced techniques for chemical and electronic structure elucidation using both experimental and computational chemistry techniques.
- Advanced Inorganic Chemistry and Materials Chemistry: This module focuses on advanced topics in materials and inorganic chemistry, including the development of new compounds and materials with 'designed' properties.
- Advanced Organic Chemistry and Materials Chemistry: This module covers topics informed by current research, providing significant depth in a specialized area of chemistry, including pharmaceutical, medicinal, and advanced mechanistic chemistry.
- Frontiers in Computational Chemistry: This module delves into frontiers in computational electronic structure theory and the various advanced computational techniques that can be used to quantitatively predict the fundamental properties of molecules.
- Frontiers in Materials Chemistry: This module builds upon previous knowledge of the area, focusing on the design, synthesis, and characterization of novel materials with applications in health, sustainable technologies, and bioimaging.
- Frontiers in Organic Chemistry: This module explores frontiers in organic chemistry, emphasizing the design and synthesis of complex organic molecules and their applications in diverse areas, including materials, drug discovery, and sustainability.
- Frontiers in Spectroscopy: This module provides further insight into techniques for the characterisation of chemical processes, including solid-state structure and disorder, advanced characterization of solid-state structures, and applications of advanced characterization.
