Introduction to the Laser Cutting Masterclass

The Laser Cutting Masterclass is an educational program that focuses on the innovative use of laser cutting technology. This program utilizes the PROUD laser cutter, a highly useful piece of equipment, to explore advanced techniques beyond basic cutting applications.

Program Details

The masterclass was led by Material Sense, in collaboration with talented designers and engineers from snijlab, a laser cutting lab in Rotterdam. The program examined the three fundamental components of laser cutting:

• Compliance (flexibility)
• The structure (surface etching)
• Jointing (connecting things)

Program Outcomes

A group of 20 participants spent the day exploring these components, with some designing their own projects and others creating lamps. The outcomes included a range of innovative designs, such as a translucent space invader lamp and a lamp that utilizes the properties of laser-cut felt to hold it together.
